Serene Amid Chaos – 5 game-changing tools to reset to calm in 60 seconds

It was such a pleasure meeting those who came to the LBL March meeting at Ria’s – and a lot of fun sharing some of the tools for rapid resetting.

Here is a quick summary of the tools we covered.

  • Hemispheric rebalance or bilateral stimulation. Aka ‘the ball toss’ or, in our case, the rose quartz toss! (Thanks to Ria for the loan of her rose quartz crystals!) Centre yourself, feet apart (not crossed), and pass the rose quartz (or ball or anything) from hand to hand, crossing the mid-line of the body. Breathe in through the nose and out through the mouth, aiming to encourage the outbreath to be twice as long as the inbreath. Calibrate your stress as a number out of 10 before starting and after 1 minute. (Source: Melissa Tiers)
  • Mindful yawning x 3. Sigh audibly on the outbreath. Notice the effect of each yawn. (source: Dr Mark Waldman)
  • Peripheral vision. (Special Forces training). Fixing your gaze on one spot and holding up your arms straight in front of you, gradually move your hands out to the edge of your peripheral vision. (Don’t move the eyeballs). Notice what you can notice, using your peripheral vision. (source: Karl Smith.) To add another dimension to this, this time from the Chinese Daoists of old – and new – soften the arms and hands as you lift them to the level of your forehead. Point your fingers in towards your forehead and then extend them in your imagination as though they could reach right into your head. Then gently draw them apart as though you’re opening the curtains. At the same time, bring to mind a big wide horizon view that makes you feel good. Open your eyes as you open the curtains and breathe fully as though breathing in fragrant air. Breath out long and slow. Repeat as long as it feels good.
  • Ask yourself the question: How do I want to feel? Then conjure it up in yourself and get a felt sense of it in your body. Remember this and revisit frequently.

We didn’t have time to learn the self-hypnosis that I planned and there was a general wish to continue with learning these tools, perhaps as a monthly meeting. There is also an idea to start a group to support mums of small children – a mix of these and other tools and coaching.
